Adzenys ER is an extended-release 1.25mg/mL liquid suspension compared to most other brands of amphetamine which are tablet and capsule formulations. Dyanavel XR is also an amphetamine extended-release liquid suspension, but with a strength of 2.5mg/mL.

  • In September 2017, the FDA approved Adzenys ER (amphetamine), a once-daily, 1.25mg/mL extended-release liquid suspension formulation indicated for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in patients 6 years and older.
  • Adzenys ER is available in an orange-flavored suspension that requires no refrigeration or reconstitution.
  • All amphetamine products for ADHD are schedule CII controlled substances.

Adzenys ER vs other amphetamine brands

Before the approval of Adzenys ER, the FDA approved once-daily Adzenys XR-ODT (amphetamine) in January 2016 for the treatment of ADHD in patients 6 years and older.

  • Adzenys XR-ODT was the first extended-release orally disintegrating tablet (ODT) available for ADHD.

  • Adzenys XR-ODT is available in the same six dosage strengths as Adderall XR (ranging from 3.1 mg to 18.8 mg per tablet), but is patented and not a generic of amphetamine mixed salts XR capsules.

  • Allow tablet to disintegrate in saliva then swallow. It may be taken with or without food.

Adzenys XR-ODT utilizes the same proprietary modified-release drug delivery technology as Adzenys ER suspension, thereby providing health care providers the option to transition patients from liquid to ODT formulations. Both Adzenys ER and Adzenys XR-ODT are manufactured by Neos Therapeutics and are bioequivalent to Adderall XR.

Dyanavel XR is a suspension form of extended-release amphetamine for ADHD. Dyanavel XR 2.5 mg/mL suspension, approved in October 2015, was the first, extended-release amphetamine-based oral liquid for the treatment of ADHD. It is given once per day in the morning in children 6 years and older and is bubblegum flavored. Take with or without food.

The Evekeo brand of amphetamine is an immediate-release tablet used to treat ADHD, narcolepsy, and for short-term use in weight loss (obesity).

  • In ADHD, it is used for treatment of children 3 years of age and older. It comes as a 5 mg or 10 mg oral tablet, and is usually dosed once per day, but can be used in twice daily increments in children 6 of years of age or older. Children 3 to 5 years of age to start with 2.5 mg daily.
  • Evekeo is not for use as a weight loss medicine for obesity in children less than 12 years of age.
  • It is also available an orally disintegrating tablet (ODT) formulation approved for the treatment of ADHD in children 3 to 17 years of age.

Generic amphetamine and generic amphetamine salt combinations for treatment of ADHD are also available which may yield cost-savings.
