Yes, you can use Monistat during pregnancy. The CDC recommends that only topical preparations are used to treat vaginal yeast infections during pregnancy, and Monistat is available as a vaginal cream in a prefilled applicator or a vaginal suppository with an applicator. Topical preparations expose the developing baby to less medication than oral preparations (such as fluconazole tablets). The CDC also recommends that a 7-day course of a vaginal cream or vaginal suppositories are used, and that women check with their health provider first to make sure that their symptoms are actually caused by a yeast infection.

Some experts suggest only inserting the applicator halfway if you are pregnant, or using your fingers to insert the vaginal suppositories, rather than using an applicator.

Vaginal yeast infections occur more often during pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters. This increased frequency is thought to be at least partially related to changes in your hormone levels and immune system during pregnancy. Symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection include:

  • Vaginal itching, soreness, or burning
  • Redness or irritation
  • Pain during sex
  • Vaginal discharge that looks like cottage cheese
  • Pain while urinating

Monistat is available over the counter (OTC), which means you do not need a prescription for it. However, tell your doctor if you develop a vaginal yeast infection during pregnancy.
