Probiotics cause few, if any, side effects. The most common side effects of probiotics include temporary gastrointestinal effects, such as gas or bloating, which may lead to belching or flatulence. Some yeast-based probiotics may also cause constipation.

Probiotics are defined as live organisms that have health benefits for people when taken in adequate amounts.

People with a compromised immune system, women who are pregnant, or people with a leaky gut or severe inflammatory bowel disease should be careful taking probiotics because, rarely, serious infections and sepsis (an infection of the bloodstream) have occurred.
